Peer group provides an opportunity for groups of dentists and dental care professionals to review aspects of practice1.  The aim is to share experiences and identify areas in which changes can be made with the objective of improving the quality of service offered to patients. All useful documents can be found at the bottom of these guidance notes on how to setup and run a Peer review Group and also links to the CQC website Mythbusters section by John Milne.

Benefits of Peer Groups:

  • A method of sharing knowledge between colleagues
  • A stimulus for individual learning
  • A tool to change and improve practice performance
  • A method of supporting daily practice activities
  • A method for agreeing clinical standards for a clinical audit
  • A vehicle to improve communications and build relationships between local practices

Setting up Peer Groups:

All groups will require a leader / facilitator to:

  • Provide the impetus to get the group together
  • Organise agenda
  • Keep a record of what has been reviewed at each meeting
  • Act as a point of contact for other members
  • Produce a report at the end of the meetings
  • The facilitator may delegate the leading of each meeting to another member each session

Each member must make the following commitments to the peer group:

  • Be willing to be part of a peer group
  • Be willing to attend all meetings or as many as possible
  • Be willing to review aspects of their own practice and share this information
  • Be open to implementing changes within their own practice to improve the quality of service offered to patients


  • Should be held at regular intervals
  • Be a group of around 6 individuals from at least two different practices


  1. Choose a facilitator
  2. Choose some topics to discuss, frequency of meetings, location etc
  3. Ensure everyone has the dates for future meetings
  4. Identify a lead for the meeting or each topic
  5. Ensure all relevant paperwork is filled out at each meeting
  6. At the start of each meeting, spend a few minutes discussing how lessons learnt from the meeting has changed processes in individual delegates own practices
  7. Complete a summary report at the end and choose someone to lead the next meeting

There will be a core membership who commit to attending the majority of the meetings

Each member will be prepared to take the lead on a topic and prepare for and lead the meeting

Additional members may be taken into the group with the agreement of the majority of members

Aims and Objectives of the peer group:

Aims and objectives of the peer group are agreed and each member has an opportunity to evaluate the session in order for the session to be verifiable.  Aims and objectives can be discussed with the Dental Practice Adviser of the Area Team (frank Hollinshead) if required. Facilitator of the group:

One member of the group will act as link between the LDN and the group. They will have the details for all members of the group and share this with the members to allow the leaders of individual sessions to contact each member and to facilitate on line communication between members as necessary.

The facilitator will ensure that suitable topics are identified and there is a lead person for each peer session to research the evidence and lead the discussion.

The facilitator or lead person for a meeting will distribute the programme of meetings including the topics, location and leader of each meeting.

The facilitator will summarise the session, and feedback to the LDN / LDC.  The peer group will need to decide how the attendance register is stored

Lead members for sessions:

Within the group, a member will be nominated to act as leader for each session to ensure that the workload is shared.

The session leader will be responsible for ensuring that group members have all papers needed for the meeting, and for completing the summary of the meeting and communicating  this to the members and the peer group facilitator. Each peer group member is responsible for keeping their own records.


This will be provided by the peer group and will depend on whether the requirements for verifiable CPD are met. A template will be provided.  The aims and objectives will need to be added to this certificate.
